How to give and receive feedback… Part 1…

We all need people who will give us feedback. That’s how we improve.”

– Bill Gates

It takes humility to seek feedback, It takes wisdom to understand it, analyze it and appropriately act on it.

— Stephen Covey

Before we move on to how to give and receive feedback, first we must understand what is feedback.

Feedback is communication of information about behavior or performance in a way that enables receivers to use it to their advantage and benefit.

Broadly feedback is classified in three types:

  1. Positive: affirming comments about past behavior. Focuses on behavior that was successful and should be continued.
  2. Negative: describes a perceived negative behavior, without proposing a resolution.
  3. Constructive: highlights how a person could do better next time; needs to be delivered sensitively.

How to give Feedback:

Give my feedback to me, not to others, I don’t have any branches.

Tips for giving Feedback:

  • Feedback should always be given to concern person only.
  • Give positive feedback.
  • Avoid Negative feedback, instead give constructive feedback.
  • Appreciate in public, but criticism should be in private.
  • Be aware of your body language.
  • Be specific when recalling a situation
  • Acknowledge the impact of behavior on you.
  • Don’t judge the person.
  • Offer suggestion for change.
  • Feedback should be helpful to receiver.
  • Focus on the situation not on the person.
  • Give recommendation on how to improve.
  • Don’t make assumptions.

We will discuss the most important part of feedback i.e. receiving feedback in next post… Here is the link

  2. Giving feedback its part of my job but I still find it difficult as people tend to always take it personally bringing contra arguments in response. Its in human nature to believe that we are the best and we don’t need improvement. Still need to work my way when it comes to it, however I agree with your post 100%.
Feedback its an useful tool when it comes to personal growth!

    1. I do agree many a times people take feedback too personally specially in case of negative feedback…
But that is where Giver has to be vigilant enough about the behavior or the receiver and how the receiver can react…
We should always try to avoid negative feedback and rather make it constructive and beneficial for the receiver…

    1. Your welcome dear… Yes giving constructive feedback needs lots of practice… I we will not able to give constructive feedback… And receiver will not get the message which we want to give… We keep on losing relationship… We need to be very careful while giving feedback…
