In my previous post Understand resilience, its attributes and your own score, we have understood what resilience means and what are the attributes of resilient people. Now, In this post we will learn how to build resilience.

So today we will discuss some simple, smart and practical ways in which each one of us can build and improve resilience. As we all know resilience is very important in tough situation like this.

10 ways to build Resilience:

1. Make and nurture good relationship:

Good relationships with close family members, friends or others are important. Accepting help and support from those who care about you and will listen to you strengthens resilience. Moreover this gives a sense of feeling that we have people whom we can discuss our problems.

2. Do not see crisis as undefeatable problems:

You cannot change the fact that highly stressful events happen, but you can change how you interpret and respond to these events. Try looking beyond the present to how future circumstances may be a little better.
In addition, note down any subtle ways in which you might already feel somewhat better as you deal with difficult situations.

3. Take crucial actions:

Act on adverse situations as much as you can. Take decisive actions, rather than detaching completely from problems and stresses and wishing they would just go away.

Always remember, the outside environment is same for all, what makes us different is what lies inside us.

4. Keep things in perspective:

Even when facing very painful events, try to consider the stressful situation in a broader context and keep a long-term perspective. Avoid blowing the event out of proportion.

5. Attitude of Gratitude to build Resilience:

Always count your blessings rather than focusing on your difficulties. You have survived and thrived till now, you will survive this also. Try to see what all things and people you have in this difficult situation and be grateful of those.

Gratitude plays significant role in building resilience, Therefore you might wish to understand more on gratitude, these two posts will help you.

6. Focus on Building Physical Hardiness.

What kind of small changes can you invest in to improve your health? (Better sleep, better nutrition, hydration, exercise, etc.)

Moreover list one small change you can make now and do that consistently and you will see improvement in your life.

7. Identify and Use Your Strengths:

Describe a time when you were able to overcome or handle a major challenge in life.

What did you learn about yourself?
What personal strengths did you draw upon?

Focusing on the strengths gives you power and remembering a situation which you conquered last time helps you in improving your resilience and give you strength to fight the current situation.

8. Build Goals to Build Resilience:

Having a sense of where you are going in life is important. Therefore, set some realistic Goals and regularly work towards them. Setback will happen but resilient people keep the destination in mind and always work toward reaching the destination.

9. Look for opportunities to know yourself:

Engage in new things and actively look for new opportunities that put you out of your professional and personal comfort zone. These experiences help people learn about themselves and in addition will surely provide a feeling of growth and achievement.

10. Take care of Yourself:

Pay attention to your own needs and feelings. Engage in activities that you enjoy and find relaxing. Exercise regularly. Taking care of yourself helps to keep your mind and body informed to deal with situations that require resilience.

Key Takeaways to build Resilience:

One should have people with whom you can share yourself and take guidance. Apart from good relationship one should have capacity to take some decisive actions in time. A sense of Gratitude is very important in building resilience, as until we become happy and grateful for things and people we have we cannot build resilience to fight the situation.

Last but not the least, One need to take utmost care of himself/herself and focus on developing some key skills and try to figure out the opportunity in disguise.
