Before we move on to how to give and receive feedback, first we must understand what is feedback.
Feedback is communication of information about behavior or performance in a way that enables receivers to use it to their advantage and benefit.
Broadly feedback is classified in three types:
- Positive: affirming comments about past behavior. Focuses on behavior that was successful and should be continued.
- Negative: describes a perceived negative behavior, without proposing a resolution.
- Constructive: highlights how a person could do better next time; needs to be delivered sensitively.
How to give Feedback:
Give my feedback to me, not to others, I don’t have any branches.
Tips for giving Feedback:
- Feedback should always be given to concern person only.
- Give positive feedback.
- Avoid Negative feedback, instead give constructive feedback.
- Appreciate in public, but criticism should be in private.
- Be aware of your body language.
- Be specific when recalling a situation
- Acknowledge the impact of behavior on you.
- Don’t judge the person.
- Offer suggestion for change.
- Feedback should be helpful to receiver.
- Focus on the situation not on the person.
- Give recommendation on how to improve.
- Don’t make assumptions.
