Learning about Life from Ad Slogans… Part 1

When we watch television we normally avoid watching Advertisements. However, if you watch the advertisement carefully and listen there slogans, many of the Ads gives us Learning about life. We can apply those little slogans in our life and we can surely improve our life.

Here I have made an attempt to do the same I have collected some old and new Ads and Companies Slogans….. Let’s look at some of them and see what we can learn and apply from these slogans….

1. McDonalds – “I’m Loving’ It”

We should love our life and must feel as well as saying that “I am loving it”. And believe me, our life will be beautiful. If you will not love your life and yourself, how someone else will.

2. Subway – “Eat Fresh”

To keep ourselves healthy and fit, we should eat healthy and nutritious food. So “Eat fresh; eat healthily, and stay fit and stay healthy.” In addition don’t forget to do regular exercise to stay fit.

3. Kit Kat – “Have a Break, Have a Kit Kat”

The break is very important. When we work in the office, we take a small break and get energized. Similarly, in life, we should take a break and spend a good time with family go out and explore the world. You will feel energized in life and life will become interesting. Therefore, in life also we should have a break.

4. Dr Pepper – “What’s the Worst That Could Happen?”

When you start anything new in life, we started thinking, what if scenarios…. What if this happens, what if that happens…. And because of which many a time we don’t even take a new task or new risk in life.

Rather, we should think that what the worst can happen. We may fail. If you will not try because of fear of failure then there is no chance of success. If you try you have a chance to succeed. Moreover, even if you fail and learn from your failure then it’s not a failure it is definitely your success.

5. Honda: The power of dreams

If you don’t build your dreams, someone else will hire you to help them build their dream.

Therefore, Follow your dreams instead of following others.

If you can dream it you can do it. Your life’s dream should take the form of your goal and you should have the plan and execution of that plan to achieve your goal. And you will definitely achieve your dreams…. That’s the power of dreams.

6. Classmate: Be better than yourself

Why we do not ask questions, Analysis of reasons and solutions

In my previous post The Art of questioning, why we should ask question, we have discussed on some facts about the art of questioning and its benefits. So today let us analyze the reason why we do not ask questions and the possible solutions for the same.

There are two main reasons why we do not ask questions or why we lack curiosity.

  1. Personal
  2. Environmental or Upbringing

Personal: Let us analyze the personal reason in details

1. Fear: one of the main reason why we do not ask questions

Fear of what other people think, fear of what if I have asked a dumb question, people may laugh at me.

Solution: “Face your Fear”.
Yes, it is easy to say than doing it. However, we need to face our fear. If you fear to ask questions in a public forum. Then you can start developing the habit of asking questions in a smaller set of people, or you can start in a one-to-one conversation.
All I am trying to say is that we need to start developing a habit of asking questions; once it will be part of our habit we will start asking questions at the public forum also. In addition, once you start asking questions, your logical thinking will improve and you will start asking more logical and wonderful questions, which will benefit not only you but also people at large.

2. Ego: Why we do not ask questions because we have ego

If this is the case then it is a bit dangerous, as fighting with fear is much easier than fighting with Ego. We do not ask questions when we think we know it all. Moreover, if you really know it all then you should be on the other side of the table. However, you do not know it all, you have no fear but still, you are not asking questions because of your status and ego then it is very dangerous.

Solution: As we already know, asking questions makes us humble, so here also the solution is asking questions only. If in the public forum you do not want to ask questions because of your Ego, do not ask. Ask the question to the presenter in a break one-on-one, but ask. Once you start asking questions in this way you will understand that you do not know all things, there are a lot many things to learn, this will make you humble, and you will start asking questions in public forums also.

3. Shyness:

There are people who have a very good question to ask but still, they do not ask because they are too shy and they do not want attention.

Solution: These types of people need some practice and preparation so they need to do is:

  • Decide that you will speak up at least once during a meeting.
  • Give yourself a reward, if you will ask a question in today’s forum or discussion or meeting you will buy this.
  • Eliminate your negative thoughts and ask questions by the closing your eyes when you are alone.
  • Sometimes we really are our own worst enemy.
  • Do not allow your inner critic to put you down.

4. Other People are not asking:

Wah, what a reason for not asking questions.
Solution: If other people are not asking questions it could be they are falling under any of the above categories or they really do not have anything to ask, but that does not mean that you will not ask any questions.

These are the few basic personal reasons why people do not ask questions especially when they are at the public forum.

Environmental or Upbringing: Yes this affects our mindset and become main reason why we do not ask questions

Now let us understand this:

1. Discouragement by parents:

As a parent, we sometimes discourage our child for asking so many questions and sometimes we even punish them for asking questions in front of Guests or when we are at any public place. Therefore, the upbringing of a child plays a major role. We should not kill the curiosity of a child.

2. Our Education System:

After upbringing, the second reason is our primary education system. We often get complains from a teacher in a Parent-Teacher Meeting that your child is asking so many questions. We need to understand that which is the normal scenario, asking questions, or being silent. Rather than this complaint, there should be a complaint that your child is not asking anything in class.

3. Your Friends:

Then comes the third reason, before you become mature enough to understand the importance of asking questions and learning. Your friends, relatives, and companions with whom you spend most of the time, these people easily influence us. They control how we think, how we act or react. We start behaving in a particular way and we become like them. Therefore, if they discouraged our habit of questioning, slowly we stop asking questions and our curiosity is killed.

Conclusion and some thoughts:

I believe these are the main reason why we are not challenging the status quo, why we do not ask questions, why our curiosity is killed.

Therefore, we need to work toward this and change our way of thinking so that we can develop a habit of asking questions in our child, students, or our friends. It is our responsibility, our social responsibility.

Having said all that, while we have to get better at asking questions, it is also equally important to be in an environment, which fosters the culture of asking questions and giving encouraging answers. Below are a few pointers on how to achieve this:

  • Do not make fun of others or shame them for asking questions.
  • It is perfectly fine to not know the answer to everything.
  • Be humble in accepting the above fact.
  • Encourage people to ask questions.
  • Learn new things while discovering answers to unknown questions.
  • Encourage your kids to ask questions and answer their questions nicely.
  • Share your learning

Let us encourage people for asking questions and let us make a good environment for people to ask questions.

Sunshine Blogger Award, Thanks for nomination

Thank you so much Akshay Kumar Das for nominating me for this Award.

Questions for me:

All of your questions are really wonderful and they are a itself a topic for a good detailed post in itself. I am trying my best to answer in short and crisp way.

  1. How do you want people to react with you? when you fail.
How will people react is not in my control, what is in my control is my attitude and my response to those reactions.
  1. How do you tolerate people’s mistakes?
It depends on couple of things, like whether the mistake is a repetition or a first time thing. It depends on the consequences of the mistake, it also depends on the person who is making the mistake.
In professional life when my team member does any mistake it is my duty to teach them and help them in understanding the importance of the work, so that they will pay more attention toward the work next time.
As it is said that “No one is perfect”. Only thing is that we should learn from mistakes, if we learn from mistake and work toward improvement, then that is not mistake.
  2. What are the best books you suggest to me to read and write a review? (Max 2 Books only)
First will be “Attitude is everything” by Jeff Keller
Second will be “The Secret” by Rhonda Byrne.
  3. The best source of inspiration for you to write.
When I started reading books on self-help genre, I have started learning and applying so many things in my life and has witnessed the change in my life. Then I though of extending this knowledge to more people, that is where idea and inspiration of writing blogs came to my mind.
  4. How to Balance Career and Future?
Not sure whether the question is on balancing career and personal life. To balance your career and personal life you should have clear GOALS for both. Like we do not want to miss our career or professional Goals , in similar ways we should not miss on our personal Goals also. We need to set our priorities clearly and once set , we should follow the same, so that we can do justice for both.
  5. What you think about Spirituality?
It is a very wide topic in itself if we start talking about it but I am giving my thoughts in a very very simple form. For me spirituality is some unknown force or energy which always protects me and help me in achieving my Life Goals. Now that could be God, Universe, Blessings of my Parents, My own good Deeds.
  6. How one can know, its love or attraction?
You are attracted to someone because of their beauty, talent, and personality but love goes beyond that. Attraction is an instant thing whereas love take time.
  7. How to be not so vulnerable to depression, what’re your tips to calm our mind? what you do personally.
It all comes with a great practice, few things which I do is:
    – Taking deep breath
    – Try not to react
    – Sometime it is okay to be angry as anger is also a emotion, which will come out.
    – Think on positive side of reason for depression
    – What is there to learn from it
    – Stop blaming yourself, and focus on rectifying the things
    – Think on things which are going well in your life, be grateful for those
Read this Do not get demotivated by failure
  8. What you do on Sundays or on holidays?
I spend some time with my family and friends and I work toward upgrading my skills, professional and Behavioral.
  9. What you eat and think or feel good for health (not the recipe but you know the name of food).
    Any Homemade food.
  10. Define your present life, and write a few words.
I am grateful for my current life, so far I have achieved so many things, few of major achievements are; in academic, I am Chartered Accountant, in area of Career, I am working in a Good MNC and in Personal life, We have bought are own house in Mumbai and live happily.

Thanks once again Akshay. I am not nominating any one specifically , I want every one to self nominate and write this wonderful post by answering the same set of questions. let us learn from each other.
If any one want to add any thoughts on any of the answers please drop your thoughts in comments.
